MATURATION: TEAK VATS & EX BOURBON BARRELS
YEARS: 7
It is day 22 of 24. Christmas is getting closer, but that doesn’t stop us from taking a short trip far away to Indonesia, on island Java, where we met Naga Java Reserve rum. The whole process starts with fermented molasses and red rice yeast in teak vats, then one part is distilled in traditional chinese still twice until it reaches 60-65% abv, and another part is distilled in column still to 92% abv. The aging process starts in teak vats for the first 3 years, and then in ex-bourbon oak barrels for next 4 years.
APPEARANCE
In the glass Naga Java Reserve is clear with deep intensity and brown color.
NOSE
Naga Java Reserve brings medium to pronounced intensity with something unusual on the nose…Touch of cardboard and some vegetal aromas. With some time on the air it develops soya, olive and plum aromas . Vanilla comes only in traces.
PALATE
Off dry and smooth on the palate. Medium pronounced flavors of salty caramel, tannin. Honey and leather are coming after a second sip. There are lots of herbal and spicy flavors like green tea, parsley. Finish is somewhere between short and medium with some complexity.
CONCLUSION
Quite interesting rum in the first place, a real refreshment for those who want to step out of the comfort zone of rums. Second place is that this rum offers very good quality.
J.D. GROSS PETIT CHOCOLAT 60% AMAZONAS
Combining amazon chocolate with Indonesian rum is something unusual, especially with all of these Asian spices in the background. Salty caramel at the beginning is topped with dark chocolate, but soya sauce gets another dimension with. This combination is a bit contradictory, but it still creates a unique experience.
